Twinning is the means by which communities who find they have certain common histories, interests, size or other connections, come together and form a civic link.
The original impetus was to form links between communities which either had been on opposite sides in the two world wars or had been allies and wished to continue friendships.
We have moved on from this, and Twinning now exists to support peace, friendship and international understanding. “Twin Towns” give their inhabitants opportunities for travel, sport, cultural visits and foreign language improvement.
